Movie: Non-stop

July 25, 2014

Liam nesson is getting type casted by doing only same kind of roles. This movie is no exception to that. After ‘Taken’ and ‘Taken 2’ his every performance is compared to that. But as usual he has performed very well in this movie too. I watched this movie assuming that this is third installment of ‘Taken’. Because the tag line of the movie says, kidnapping was just the beginning.
Bill (Liam Nesson) is an air marshal and due to some emergency he gets into a flight which lands him in trouble. In the flight he keeps getting text messages describing after how many minutes who is getting killed. Shocked Bill, tries his best to identify the person who is threatening him. After series of sequences, he finds out about the bomb placed in the airplane. In his attempts he gets help from co-passenger Jen (Julianne Moore), whom he doubted first. The needle of doubt continuously revolves around different characters, including Bill. Who is the real terrorist, whether bill succeeds in saving the passengers or not, and what is the true past of bill is better seen in the movie.
Director Jaume Collet-Serra, has done a very good job. Viewer is tied to the chair till last scene of the movie, it’s very engaging. Towards end of first half, the pace becomes slow, but it again picks up very well. All the performances are very good and climax sequences are excellent. Only thing which I felt could have been improved was the avoidance of few un-necessary scenes. It could have made the movie shorter and more enjoyable.
Overall, this is a definite watch for suspense, crime, drama movie lovers.

Movie: The wolf of wall street

May 11, 2014

Some movies are not made for everyone to like but specifically targeted to particular segment of the audiences. This movie is that kind of movie. Not everybody will like it, but those who will like it, will like it the most. I liked this movie very much. 
Movie is based on true story about a guy Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DeCaprio) who enters the world of share market, share trading and becomes very rich by completely devoting his life to it. On one side he is very focused and concentrated in his work, on the other side he is partying and enjoying the life really hard. He is into all types of drugs, sex, parties and all this happening in the office during work hours. He started living the life he always dreamed of. But soon, his hunger for money makes him do things which are not legal. Luckily he is not in the eyes of cops or any higher criminal investigators but due to some incidents at his office and by his colleagues, he catches the attention of FBI. His life is always full of ups and downs, sometimes due to problems in the share market, sometimes due to side effects of drugs, sometimes due to his friends and colleagues. The story is solely based on the life of Jordan and all the other characters are interesting but the character of Jordan is the best.
Director Martin Scorsese has proved his mastery again by awesome, brilliant direction of the movie. What is unique about Martin Scorsese’s movies is that these movies completely absorb us into them; we enter into a different world that is being shown on the screen. But as movie reaches to the climax, we are brought back. The camera work, screenplay, dialogues, characters and every small thing in the movie is so different and unique that you will be amazed by it. It’s a complete roller coaster ride of emotions, funny scenes and interesting sequences. Performance of Leonardo Decaprio is according to me, his best performance till date. All the other supporting actors also have done perfect job in their characters. Jonah Hill also has given the excellent performance as Donnie.
Overall, this movie is a must watch for you if you enjoy movies with different treatment, different story and many adult scenes.

Marathi book: Fakira

May 3, 2014

I heard about this book when I was in school 15 years back but couldn’t find this book to read at that time. Recently in one of the book fairs I came across this book accidentally and I immediately grabbed it. It is a small book of just 140-150 pages, so you could easily finish this in one sitting of 3-4 hours.
As the name says, story is about a villager Fakira, whose father Ranoji has died for his village. Fakira has lost his father when he was only 10 years old. He is living in village with his mother, grandfather, grandmother and younger brother Sadhu. Since childhood Fakira has admired his father and what he had done for the village and truly wants to surpass that by doing something bigger. Story takes place in the years before India’s independence. So story has lots of incidences which are relevant to those years and system which existed in villages those days. I was unaware about many things which existed then, so this book really helped me understand how ‘Patil’ and ‘Kulkarni’ were not only surnames but it was also the responsibility towards village and villagers. The story unfolds beautifully and is for 10-15 years of time span. How Fakira and his childhood friends fight against the situations and what destiny wants from them is brilliantly woven in the story. How situations turn a normal human being into a great leader, great warrior is the story all about.
What I enjoyed most about the book is the story, situations in it, dialogues, description of the fights, incidents. The book has foreword by V. S. Khandekar, please don’t read it before reading the book. He has told the complete story in short in that foreword. Don’t know how and why that foreword was approved. Author Anna Bhau Sathe has done wonderful job. He has received multiple awards for the book already and this book is translated into many foreign languages as well.
Overall, this book is a must read for all story lovers.

Movie: Dead Man Down

April 7, 2014

After watching some movies you feel refreshed, you feel amazed, you just love the experience of enjoying every moment in the movie. This is one of those types of movies. A tender love arising amidst all crime and violence would be the one line description of this movie.
Victor (Colin Farrell) is a gangster living in New York City. Beatrice (Noomi Rapace) is his neighbor who recently had an accident and has to undergo a major facial surgery due to it. Beatrice knows Victor just by seeing him every day through the window. She wants to take a revenge of man who was driving the car she had accident with. She requests victor to kill that guy, so that she could feel happy. Victor on the other hand is going through difficult situations himself and could not help her initially. They keep seeing each other willingly or unwillingly and start liking each other. Victor has some dark past and couldn’t be with Beatrice though he wants to. What is Victor’s past, what is his real identity, what happens with his relationship with Beatrice; all these questions are beautifully answered in the movie.
Director Niels Arden Oplev has done excellent work. Story is extremely good and director has directed it more brilliantly. Performance of Collin Farrell is top notch. He has pulled off the difficult character of Victor perfectly. He has displayed good mixture of ruthless action and emotions in Victor’s character. In the initial part of the movie it has got good suspense with Victor’s past, towards the end there is anxiety about Victor’s next plan. I couldn’t know when I was so involved in the movie and was really excited to see what’s going to happen next. Because of interesting screenplay, this movie can be watched multiple times.
Overall, this movie is a brilliant piece of work, don’t miss it for anything.

Movie: American Hustle

March 4, 2014

After so many days I watched and liked a con movie. Story is set in 70’s and said to be based on true rumors. This movie is a treat for movie lovers.
It is a story of how con man Irving Rosenfield (Christian Bale) and his partner Sydney (Amy Adams), get trapped into the web of FIB agent Richie Dimaso (Bradley Cooper) and what happens next with them. Story is also about love relations between Irving and his wife Rosalyn (Jeniffer Lawrence). It is also about another love triangle between Irving, Sydney and Richie. There are continuous ups and downs in the relationships between main characters of story.
Story is very well written and screenplay is damn good. Story is beautifully woven in funny and interesting incidents. All the performances are brilliant, especially by Christian Belle. He has really molded himself perfectly into the character. Jeremy Renner as Mayor polito is a short role but actor has done it sincerely. Guest appearance by Robert D’ Niro is a good surprise for his fans. Direction of David Russell is fantastic.
Overall, this is a must watch movie for crime, con movie lovers.

Movie: The Heat

February 11, 2014

Sometimes you don’t expect anything from a movie and it stuns you. This is exactly happened with me when I watched the movie, I expected nothing from it and it turned out a laugh riot. One of the most interesting movies I have seen ever.
This movie is a story of a lady FBI agent Ashburn (Sandra Bullock) who gets assigned on a case to find out a drug lord. She has to travel to boston for her new assignment and work with the local police there. Mullins (Melissa McCarthy) is bad mouthed, continuously abusing, brave lady officer who cares about no one and completely opposite of Ashburn. Mullins brother is also somehow involved in drug racket, so this is very personal case for Mullins, hence despite the reluctance from Ashburn she works on the case. Ashburn, who was very reluctant to work with Mullins, later starts appreciating her. In their search for drug lord, they have to go through many funnier incidences. What happens with the case, what happens with the 2 leading ladies and mullins family, will they bond with each other, will they able to solve the case despite opposition from whole police staff, all these questions are very well answered in the movie.
Director Paul Feig has done excellent job and kudos to him for that. Jokes in this movie are really really funny, whacky, situations are new. Body language and dialogue delivery of both the leading ladies is awesome, their chemistry is amazing, and they complement each other very well. The entire supporting star cast is also very good in their performances. There is no single character which is not funny. This movie is a good example of crime based comedy movies.
Overall, do watch this movie you will surely enjoy it.

Movie: Escape Plan

February 11, 2014

Did you like Prison Break TV series, I liked it a lot. This movie is just the smaller version of it.
Directed by Mikael Hafstorm this movie is a story of Ray Breslin (Sylvester Stallone) and Rottmayer (Arnold Schwarzenegger). Ray breslin is an expert in building security systems. He also has developed a habit of breaking out from prisons, display the flaws in security and he likes challenging self again and again. One day he gets an offer to enter and break out from prison which he is not aware of and he has to agree on some unrealistic terms. But he still takes a chance and enters the prison. To his surprise, the structure of this prison is highly complex, never seen before and kind of one suggested by him only, with full proof security. There he meets a guy Rottmayer, who helps him settle in the prison and also helps him in planning out escape. What happens with both of them, whether they succeed in escaping or not, who are behind Ray breslin’s lock up in jail, what is true identity of Rottmayer, all these questions are answered beautifully in the movie.
Performances of both the lead actors are very good. Action sequences look real, dialogues are good, screenplay is also good but it could have been better. Most interesting part of the story is the escape plan, different steps in that plan, tricks used; also the suspense in the end is refreshing. Writers have done brilliant job in writing this normal story interestingly. All the supporting actors have done their well in their bit. But it is Arnold and Sylvester stallone, who steal the show completely.
Overall, enjoy watching this movie if you like action and crime based thrillers.

Movie: The Family

February 3, 2014

This movie is one of the best movies I have seen in recent times. Robert De Niro and Tommy Lee Jones have again delivered a top notch performance in this movie. Director and screen play writer Luc Besson has succeeded in delivering a movie with good combination of crime, thriller and comedy.
Manzoni’s (Robert De Niro) family has always been on the run and now they are used to it. After every fixed period of time they have to change their names and keep changing their locations from one city to another. This time they relocate to Normandy, France as ‘blake’ family. Wife Maggie blake (Michelle Pfeiffer) is well versed in using maps and find places in the city. Daughter Belle (Dianna Agron) looks suave but knows how to handle herself. Son Warren (John D’Leo) likes not to waste time and gets famous in school within short time. Robert (Tommy Lee Jones) is on special duty to protect the family from other mafias who are on their hunt. Manzoni and family try their best to get mixed in town but destiny has some other plans for them. Their cover gets blown up completely when story written by Warren in school magazine accidentally reaches to one of the mafia gang leader. What happens with the family, whether they will survive this time, what happens with manzoni’s newly developed habit of writing, all these questions are answered in the story.
Story and screenplay are excellent. Dialogues are real funny and jokes are situational, new and they really tickle your laughing bone. The straight faces of Robert De Niro and Tommy Lee Jones in hilarious scenes show that they have really lived their characters. Performances of Michelle Pfeiffer, John D’Leo and Dianna Agron are also good and up to the mark. Last 10 minutes are really thrilling and brilliantly shot.
Overall, don’t miss this movie.

Movie: The Frozen Ground

January 31, 2014

I felt depressed and was really shocked at few times when watching this movie. Written and directed by Scott Walker, this movie is based on true events. It is an intense crime thriller very well edited and directed, which keeps the audience glued to the seat till last scene.
Jack (Nicolas Cage) is an honest and sincere police cop who is about to retire in few weeks, gets assigned on important case of serial murderer. Robert Hansen (John Cusack) is living two faced life, on one side he is a calm, decent, happily married guy but in his true avatar he is calm, cold blooded murderer, who not only kills young girls but first kidnaps and rapes them horribly. Cindy Paulson (Vanessa Hudgens) was also kidnapped and raped by Robert, but before he kills her, she luckily manages to escape. Initially when Jack interrogates her, she refuses to cooperate with police based on her history with police. Robert is a good pilot and he had always successfully deleted all the possible evidences against him, by burying them in frozen ground. Cops and attorneys have no solid evidence against him so they couldn’t hold him behind bars. How Jack saves cindy from Robert, how jack manages to get evidence against Robert, why jack desperately wants to save cindy, all these questions are answered in movie.
Movie is very well directed and it is interesting and thrilling to watch. This genre can go extremely wrong if screenplay is poor, but this movie is very engrossing. Nicolas cage and John Cusack have performed brilliantly in their roles. All the supporting stars are also well suited in their roles and do justice to it.
Overall, don’t miss this movie if you like crime thrillers.

Movie: 2 Guns

January 13, 2014

This is one of the fantastic crime based action movies I have seen recently. Directed by Baltasar Kormakaur, this movie is a definite watch for crime movie lovers.

Bobby (Denzel Washington) and Stig (Mark Wahlberg) rob a bank, based on the information that it has 3 million dollars. But actually the lockers in bank carry 43 million dollars. They collect all the 43 millions without knowing whose money it is. Actually Bobby is a undercover DEA agent and Stig is a navy officer, both are following the orders of their seniors. When both of them know each other’s true identity they split their ways but destiny brings them together. Police officers, Navy officers and drug mafias are on their trail for money. What happens with Bobby, Stig and the money they have stolen is interesting to watch on screen. Action scenes, dialogues, chase sequences are not very new but different then what we have seen earlier. Most interesting part in the movie is chemistry between lead pair of Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg. They both have given excellent performances. In some scenes Denzel Washington has done some overacting but its tolerable. Paula Petton (as Debby) has a small role and she is just a place holder in movie. Treatment to the movie is completely fresh and it makes the movie enjoyable.

Performances of all the characters are good. Some scenes are hilarious. Mark Wahlberg has given another top notch performance. Director Baltasar Kormakaur has done superb job in making this movie interesting by keeping suspense till the end. Every move made by either one from lead pair is completely unexpected and it keeps you guessing about what is going to happen next.

Overall, don’t miss this one.
