Hindi Movie: pk

December 29, 2014

It has become a trend these days to talk about religion and rituals in it, without going into the details of it. This movie is just an example of that. Writers Abhijat Joshi, Rajkumar Hirani has tried to take a third party view of the religious system in India but they have only targeted as usual Hindu religion and Hindu gods.

Jagajjanani aka jaggu (Anushka Sharma) working as a news reporter in Hindi news channel wants to do a story for her show and she comes across pk (Aamir Khan). Pk speaks in bhojpuri language and distributing the pamphlets showing Hindu gods and labeled as missing. To find out the truth of pk, she follows him till jail. Pk is basically an alien who have come from some another planet and people over there are exactly like humans on earth. Pk lands on earth to do research on human beings but his remote control is stolen within first 10 minutes on earth in India in Rajasthan. Completely naked pk, finds clothes, learns the value of money, downloads Bhojpuri language into him from one prostitute and tries his best to find remote control with the help from cops and gods later. In his attempt to do so, he questions the basics of every individual he meets and eventually tries to understand the base of religions in India. One self proclaimed Hindu sadhu has bought pk’s remote control from the original thief. With the help from jaggu, pk finally gets back his remote control and leaves back to his planet.

I would have really loved this movie if it had not made fun of Hindu gods and rituals followed in it. In an attempt to make the funny and entertaining movie, director and writer of the film has made fun of Hindu gods and Hindu rituals, which is completely unforgiving. It takes years to follow rituals and pray from the bottom of the heart, to find true god, but the poor writer of the movie won’t understand this. Songs in the movie are okay, not so good. Sanjay Dutt as bhairav singh and Sushant singh Rajput as Sarfaraz, have done decent jobs in their short roles. Anushka Sharma has also tried her best but ends up as just a placeholder in the movie, in front of Aamir Khan. Aamir Khan has done over acting this time as well. Director Rajkumar Hirani still thinks that he has made another out of the box thinking type movie, but this movie has only shown his short knowledge about religion this time, earlier it was about lack of his knowledge about education system in India in 3 idiots.

Overall, you will like this movie only if you are not a true believer of any religion.

Book: 7 secrets of Vishnu

November 21, 2013

This book is written by well known speaker and author Devdutt Patnaik. This book is very similar to his book ‘7 Secrets of Shiva’. Both the books I think were published together and I even bought them together. Similar to ‘7 secrets of shiva’ this book also contains images on every left hand page and description on the right hand page, which makes the book more interesting.

As the name says, the book is about Hindu God Vishnu and it is divided into 7 parts as following:
1. Mohini’s secret
2. Matsya’s secret
3. Kurma’s secret
4. Trivikrama’s secret
5. Ram’s secret
6. Krishna’s secret
7. Kalki’s secret

Though the chapters are named as secrets, there is nothing unknown or new found or fake things about God Vishnu. It basically contains information about Vishnu’s all incarnations (Avatar) on earth. The book also illustrates many concepts from mythology along with images.
The book attempts to elaborate more about God Vishnu through different stories and author also illustrates them to help us understand more. All chapters in this book are very good but last chapter is very good.

I came to know many new stories about God Vishnu and it helped me to think in different perspective about the already known stories. It is really magical that the Hindu mythological literature always enables to you look at life in broader perspective. In fact it has definitely liberated me as a human being.

Most of the stories are rarely known to even Hindu’s and especially to today’s youth.
I would recommend this book to everyone.
